Matthew Inabnit, wrote a very nice entry for our scribe blog about our last trip, which can be viewed below and is posted on our site.
Hot Springs Backpacking Trip 2009
April 24-26
This was probably one of the hardest backpacking trips any of the Scouts have participated in so far. The first night, we camped by a river and ate breakfast there the next morning. Saturday we hiked on a trail called Round Top Ridge and it was almost entirely uphill. Scouts and leaders soon began to get low on water. A lot of people were running out of water completely. So, we cut out our hike to the fire tower since people were so desperate for water. We hiked downhill for what seemed like an eternity and eventually dug a hole in the ground for water. Then, we hiked for about an hour and came across a decent fresh water stream. We stayed there and filled up everyone’s water bottle and water bladder. We then hiked for about 15 minutes and we reached our campsite (Thank goodness!). We rested, played around, and ate dinner for the rest of the day on Saturday. We put all of our food in bear bags for the night to stop bears from eating it and us! There were rumors that a bear was near our campsite during the night. The new fashion accessory for Troup 17 is a hammock! We had 8 Scouts in hammocks and 7 Scouts in tents.
The next day, Sunday, was the best part of the trip. We hiked to the top of the mountain and saw an awesome view of the mountains and the river. We were almost finished with the hike and everyone rushed down the mountain to get to the cars so we could go home. On this trip we hiked for about 13 miles on part of the Appalachian Trail. Now everyone will think we are “hard-core” hikers!

After our last successful backpacking trip, several scouts mentioned an interest in going to Philmont http://www.scouting.org/philmont next summer. If they are interested, I need a $50 deposit to reserve your spot on the trip and we will set up a payment schedule that will start this fall. So far Jim Weston, Trey Weston, Hal Bates and Robert Bates have already committed for the trip. This trip is limited and spaces will be filled quickly. If we reach our maximum, a total number of 10 scouts and leaders, we’ll create a waiting list for others interested in the trip.
Only boys that will be age 14 by September 1, 2010 will be eligible to participate.
Jim Weston and I will be taking a crew from Troop 17 and plan to hike down the Grand Canyon http://bp2.trimbleoutdoors.com/ViewTrip.aspx?tripId=56089 following our trip.
Proposed Itinerary:
· July 16th – Travel to Philmont
· July 17- 29 – Days at Philmont
· July 29 – Leave Philmont for Grand Canyon
· July 30 – Hike down Grand Canyon and camp
· July 31 – Hike back up Grand Canyon
· August 1 – Fly home
Estimated costs:
· Philmont – $ 620
· Flight – $350 (estimated)
· Bus/Shuttle – $100 (estimated)
· Travel Food – $100 (estimated)
· Campgrounds – $100 (estimated)
· Misc – $100 (estimated)
· Total = $1,370
These are only estimated costs for you to review your budget. Once we have a crew, we’ll have a few separate Philmont meetings with the boys to plan our hike and training schedule to get in top backpacking shape and more accurate costs will be available as we approach our date.
Please send a check payable to Troop 17 for $50.
Should you have any questions, please let me know.

Our annual Trail’s End Popcorn fundraiser, headed up by Melanie Hawks (The Popcorn Queen), is held each fall, but Trail’s End is opening their on-line popcorn this spring for the boys to earn a little extra cash.
Here’s the website: http://www.orderpopcorn.com/
How does it work?
1. Go on-line below and set up your account and Trail’s End will give you’re a pass code.
2. All on-line sales with that pass code will benefit the individual scout
3. Email your friends and family to let them know
4. 30% of all sales will be reimbursed back to the scout’s family directly (Troop 17 doesn’t receive any money from these spring sales)
5. Do the math – your scout sells $1,000 the family gets $300 back
6. Use the money for summer camp, gear or anything you want – you’ll get cash $$$, not a gift certificate.
7. Get entered into drawings for prizes when you sell at a certain level
8. FREE shipping for the customers when they order at a certain level.
9. On-line and done directly by the scouts
10. The council mails the commission checks directly to the family, not the troop.

We went over the three R’s of Scouting and how to recognize child abuse. Hal also explained the “two deep” leadership rule and how it protects your young scouts and the leaders in the troop. We had a good meeting overall and some of the boys are well on their way to finishing up the safety requirements. The remaining items (1a,b.c.d.e,2a,b,3b,4,5,6,7) all need to be worked on at home. I’ll plan on being at the meeting next week around 7:00 to check off any additional completed items. Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.
